For working civil engineers seeking to grow their knowledge at the graduate level, the course-based Civil Engineering MEng degree is the ticket. If you prefer course-based learning and aren’t interested in completing a thesis, you can finish your degree requirements in as little as one year. If it’s flexibility you’re looking for, this degree is also available part time. It requires the completion of 10 courses, two of which can be senior undergraduate-level courses. Having a graduate degree in civil engineering will give you an advantage pursuing advanced careers in government, engineering consulting, construction and property development, the resource industries and public utilities, railroads, manufacturing and more. Civil engineers plan, design, and supervise the construction, maintenance and decommissioning of a wide variety of public and private structures and facilities. Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Bachelor’s degree (4-years) from a recognized institution or an equivalent degree from the university.
  • The related fields include a UG degree in Mathematics, Social Science, Statistics, History of Economics, Political Economy.
  • GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 point system, over the past two years of full-time study (10 full-course equivalents or 60 units) of an undergraduate degree.

Work Experience Eligibility:

  • Students may also be considered who have good research work.
  • For the thesis-based Master’s program, admission is offered based upon publications, participation in research projects, and academic awards.
  • It typically takes two years to complete, with a maximum of four years.

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Completed a 4-year Bachelor’s degree with first-class in a relevant field from a recognized institution
  • Or,  completed a 3-year Bachelor’s Degree must hold a Master’s Degree.
  • Or, have a CGPA of 8/10 (or 7.5/10 for IIT’s only).

Submission of GRE scores is compulsory for this program, and it is recommended to submit the scores (minimum 300) for better a chance of admission.

VISA & Work Study


  • The students need a study visa to study at designated learning institutions (DLI) in Canada.
  • A Study Visa is issued to students by Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and authorizes an individual to study at a designated learning institution in Canada for the duration of the program of study.
  • The Visa is usually valid for the length of the study program, plus an extra 90 days.

Work Study

Students with a valid Study Visa, enrolled full time are eligible to work on-campus and off-campus.

On-Campus: Students registered as full-time and have a valid Study Visa, may work on-campus 

  • There is no legal restriction on the number of hours to work on-campus, so long as the student remains a full-time student can work on-campus. 
  • Students may also work more than one job. 

Off-Campus: Students are enrolled full-time, have a valid study permit, and are in a program that leads to a UCalgary degree that takes longer than 6 months to complete, they may be eligible to work off-campus.

  • The graduate students can work 20 hours per week off-campus during regular academic sessions of Fall and Winter terms.
  • The undergraduate students can work 20 hours per week off-campus full-time during scheduled breaks. 

Work Permit: A work permit that allows international students to work full-time while still being enrolled full-time. Students may only use this work permit to work full-time during their co-op/practicum terms in a work.
