Conversations about the possible career paths that result from pairing computer science with the fine arts have been happening in academia and industry for a long time. This article offers a glimpse into some of these by showcasing the personal stories of nine people who have built careers around their passions for both art and technology.

When a puzzle piece is missing, it’s hard to see the big picture. When you don’t know what your talents are or how to apply them, it can be difficult to pick a major that fits you. And yet, we all must make picking a major part of our lives—whether it’s right out of high school or suddenly at age 40. Fortunately, some schools help students learn about the arts and sciences and feel more connected to their career options.

Making a good living as an artist is not easy. In fact, only 10 percent of professional painters can make a living from their work. The same holds true for actors, and authors. Collectively—except for the lucky few—most of us have to have some other kind of job.

As one of the world’s largest and most successful companies, Google has a lot to offer both its employees and the candidates who want to work there. From the ten Googleplex offices, to the more informal bungalow offices, where staff gather and chat informally, there is a lot to discover about working for Google. Many current and former Googlers have made it their business to tell the world exactly what it’s like–the good, the bad, and the ugly.

The two careers are concerned with the fields of art and science. They both require training and very different skill sets.

In my experience, scientists are great at coming up with theories and conducting experiments, but not so good at self-promotion. Artists, on the other hand, tend to be more interested in marketing themselves and finding opportunities for their work to be seen. When it comes to combining these two skills, there is a lot of potential for mutual benefits. Scientists could learn a thing or two from artists about creating an image that represents their work in the best possible way. Likewise, artists can learn something about how scientists conduct research and what an experiment actually entails.

Computer science can be a starting place for young people who want to make a major contribution to science and technology in the twenty-first century.
