I’ve been meaning to write this article for about a year now. With a bio-chemistry degree, teaching experience (I even tutored test prep for the GRE, GMAT, and MCAT), grad school, and experience as a data scientist – the question “can you work with math and biology” is one I get asked a lot.
The career field offers many exciting opportunities. But that’s not why you might initially be attracted to these fields. You’re interested in them because they have the potential to lead you toward a fulfilling and rewarding career. In this post, we look at the various fields available, their pay scales and the jobs they offer, and how one can land that perfect job in math or biology.
Careers with math and biology
Whether you’re chomping at the bit to get started on your career or you simply want to know the best interview questions to ask in the process, knowing where and what types of jobs are available is important. Thankfully, it’s quite common for people with a degree in mathematics or biology to have careers that don’t involve either field.

The best ways to find out what jobs are available would be to meet with a professional coach or advisor and talk to them about different options that interest you. Additionally, many universities and colleges offer career services offices where you can get assistance finding the right job for you, depending on your specific educational background and strengths.
This is a hard question since both fields are very broad with many jobs that do not even utilize math or biology degrees. I will focus on some job descriptions below. Also be aware that in both fields, you can work in different areas to earn your living. Some may end up in research, some could end up in academia, some could go into teaching and etc.
Although these four are the most-studied sciences, there are many other paths available in a wide variety of industries. Finding jobs in the sciences is a great choice for anyone who enjoys self-directed learning and especially for students interested in math or biology.
