So many people go through life without a clue of the purpose or meaning of the job that they have chosen. Is this what you want for your life? Are you going to spend 10, 20, 30 years at a job when you don’t even like it? That’s absurd! What if you could find a job that was enjoyable — where you could wake up every morning and feel great about the work you were doing?
Careers with a purpose
The purpose of our careers is to bring meaning to our professional lives. At least I believe it should be. But why are we, as digital marketers trying to win new business with existing customers, working so hard just to get paid?
WorldatWork has released a new study connecting meaningful work and employee engagement. The 2016–2017 Global Talent Monitor reveals that 56 percent of employees worldwide are actively disengaged in the workplace because work does not give them a sense of purpose. Compare that to those engaged in their jobs—70 percent of these workers said the same about their job, according to WorldatWork. Furthermore, 24 percent of workers are actively engaged with their companies; this finding reflects the broader theme of purpose, so it’s no surprise that workers with purpose within their company experience better professional fulfillment and higher levels of satisfaction.

It’s important to do something that fulfills you as a person. If you’re in a job that merely pays the bills, and doesn’t give you a sense of satisfaction during your day-to-day activities, there’s no reason to stick with it. Even the best career can stagnate if you are not driven by the work itself. It’s better to shift gears and find a career that resonates with your values, even if it may mean starting over or taking some risks. Your life is too important to leave your career satisfaction up in the air—it’s time to take control and choose a meaningful path.

A degree in environmental studies or environmental sciences could be of great value to a wind turbine technician since it would provide you with the knowledge you need to understand the impact of turbines on the environment, thus allowing you to work towards sustainable development.
