Between college, work and managing a family, my cousin has been looking for a new job. A job with flexible hours and a lot of time off. Ideally not located in California but thousands of miles away (to be closer to the rest of the family). This gave me an idea – I’m going to start a jobs board. Basically it’ll be like Monster.com but specifically for jobs with lots of time off. This way, if you’re looking to travel or relocate you can save money on travel by getting a longer leave from your employer.
Employers are regularly hiring remote workers and the telecommuting working is on the rise. The freedom of being able to work from home for 60%-90% of time makes it possible for people to change their lifestyle completely and gain a lot of flexibility when it comes to choosing an ideal job. However, not many people know that some of jobs with high percentages of time off can allow you to become a temporary or a permanent employee or can even let you develop your skills in freelancing.
Careers with a lot of time off
Have you ever heard the saying “people don’t leave companies, they leave managers”? It turns out that this is quite true – although it’s not quite what it seems. The vast majority of people leave managers, but they don’t really leave companies. What they really want is to find a job that offers them a lot of time off.
Careers where you get to work from the office are nice. Careers that allow you to work from anywhere in the world are better. That’s why so many people join the freelancer community. And for good reason too. According to a recent study by Flexjobs, working outside the home is on the rise among U.S. workers, with 63% of people saying they’d take a freelance job if it was available to them, and 23% reporting they already freelance. However, not everyone who makes the jump into freelancing gets everything they want from their new career path — namely, more time off than a traditional employer would offer.
Working remotely is a dream for a lot of people. No commute, work when and how much you want, not having to deal with office politics…these are a few reasons why it’s great. With more options available now than ever before, there’s a lot of potential in this field.
Skilled trades are experiencing a resurgence. The median salary is $74,953 and the skills you learn can apply to more than just building houses. There’s an art to it. Anyone can hammer boards together and hit nails. But taking that extra step to really understand how a structure should be built—to take extra care, be attentive, and listen to others—and you’re building something with integrity for the next 100 years.
The actual number of vacation days that managers and executives get varies a great deal, from a low of 5 days a year (that’s the entry-level figure) to a high of 25. While some companies have the same number of holiday days as their employees, they tend to be at the bottom of the range.
If you’re going to be spending a good portion of your time working from home, you may want to consider looking for work in the virtual assistant niche. This is a burgeoning career that allows you to work independently from home (and many other remote locations) so that you can enjoy the personal benefits of working from home.
It’s not just a myth. Many jobs offer employees significantly more vacation days than anyone is actually using. Strangely enough, the number of vacation days Americans are using hasn’t changed in a while, even though companies continue to offer more opportunities for over-the-top paid vacations and wellness programs…
Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide whether or not locations, hours, or other factors are more important to you; the most important thing is to just go for it.
