Cambridge MPhil Finance And Economics

The MPhil in Finance and Economics is a one-year master’s degree that runs from mid-September to late July. It is an intensive course combining advanced study and research, tailored for people with one year or less of work experience who intend to go on to work for the industry. It places particular emphasis on economic coverage of financial themes, beginning from the institutional background, moving on to careful consideration of how observed institutions should be modelled, and ending by relating existing models to data and discussing how these models should be improved when they do not fit the data. The MPhil in Finance & Economics is designed for students who wish to obtain a one-year master’s qualification before leaving academic economics and is not designed for students who wish to continue to the PhD programme. However, if a student is determined enough to continue their studies at the PhD level, there may be some leeway to transfer to the MPhil in Economics Research within the first two weeks of commencement of the course.

MPhil finance Cambridge Study Plan

On completion of the MPhil degree students should have:

  1. acquired advanced technical training in microeconomics, and econometrics;
  2. acquired, a solid grounding in the principles and practice of financial markets and developed the understanding of the tools necessary to make good financial decisions.
  3. begun to acquire independent research skills and experience of putting them into practice;
  4. acquired experience and guidance in formulating a realistic research topic and prepared written work to a strict timetable; and
  5. acquired sufficient knowledge and understanding of advanced economics to proceed to a career as a professional economist in industry or to a research degree.

Coursework tends to be more research-oriented than practical. It seems more suited for further academic study (Ph.D.) than for work placement, but the name and general drive of students get them pretty good jobs afterward.

As far as admission into the program, Cambridge has a pretty low acceptance rate (~8%). You must have superb academic credentials (+3.8-3.9 GPA) and it helps to have quantitative coursework. I feel as though the university cares less about extracurriculars, GMAT, experience, etc.

The Cambridge program is a bit different from the other UK programs. Oxford combined their MFin and MPhil programs and mixes everyone together whereas the Cambridge MPhil is strictly research-oriented for fresh undergrads. LSE is solid as well but I go the feeling that admission is less stringent given their mass quantity of degrees (feeling like a degree factory at times when looking at their list). I think all of these programs will you get you interviews in London for the “right” candidate. But I would think Oxbridge has a bit more prestige in terms of meeting with people/employers.

Cambridge Finance And Economics

The MPhil in Finance is an intensive, research-focused, and advanced degree. The program is distinctive because the electives are drawn from three Cambridge faculties – the Faculty of Economics, the Faculty of Mathematics, and Cambridge Judge Business School. The program is particularly suitable for those intending to continue to a Ph.D. at Cambridge or elsewhere. The program also provides a strong academic background for those opting for a career in finance, but it is not designed to be a vocational program. In the past few years, our graduates have been admitted into Ph.D. programs in finance and accounting at MIT, LBS, and Cambridge. Students have two options: nine taught modules, or six taught modules and a dissertation of 12,000 words.

Combining advanced study and research, this program is designed for students who wish to extend their knowledge of finance or financial engineering. The program provides research-led teaching and is particularly suitable for those intending to continue to a Ph.D. The degree also provides a strong academic background for those aiming for a career in finance.
