The Alumni Scholarship – Segment I Outstanding Student Award
Award Amount: $1,500
Established in 1972 by the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association, this scholarship helps an outstanding and deserving student with a partial tuition scholarship for a semester of study at the Boston Architectural College.
Scholarship Criteria
The following requirements must be met in order to qualify:
Students must be graduate or undergraduate students in the on-site Architecture, Interior Architecture, Landscape Architecture or Design Studies programs
Students must have been enrolled at the BAC for at least 2 semesters & currently enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits
Students must be currently enrolled in their first Segment I studio
Students meeting the above criteria will be ranked on the basis of their academic standing among all eligible students and portfolio review scores

This prize is awarded twice a year to assist an outstanding student with the most impressive portfolio from the Segment I Portfolio Review. Students are nominated based on their Portfolio Review performance and then chosen by the Scholarships & Awards Committee.

The John Worthington Ames Scholarship
Award Amount: $10,000
The John Worthington Ames Scholarship was established in 1955 by Mrs. John Worthington Ames in memory of her husband, a distinguished Boston architect and dedicated supporter of the BAC. The John Worthington Ames Scholarship is to be used to further personal development through an educational experience related to architecture and design in accordance with a stated and accepted program. The Ames Committee defines “educational experience” as one that would develop mental, artistic, or cultural capacities.
Scholarship Criteria
The following requirements must be met in order to qualify for the Ames Scholarship:
Students must have entered Thesis or Degree Project prior to the Spring 2020 semester.
Students must have attended the BAC for at least six semesters (students with equivalent transfer credit are also eligible to apply).
Students must not have applied for this scholarship twice before.
Students who graduated in the past year may apply provided they have not done so twice before
Application Requirements
To be considered for the scholarship, students must submit the following materials:
An essay of 500 words maximum (double spaced) outlining their proposed use of the funds, travel itinerary and how they feel this use will further their professional, academic and personal goals.
A hard copy of their portfolio (electronic copies will not be accepted). Portfolios are limited to the standard presentation size of either 8 ½ x 11″ or 11 x 17″. No oversized portfolios will be reviewed.
An Informational Session for students interested in applying will take place on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 from 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM in the Fishbowl at 320 Newbury Street. The session will be led by Bernard J. Goba, AIA, DFA honoris causa, Permanent Secretary of the Ames Scholarship.
Deadline to submit application materials is 6 PM on Monday, March 2, 2020.

Holly Cratsley, B.Arch ’84 Scholarship
Award Amount: $1,500
This scholarship is awarded each fall to an outstanding female architecture student based on academic merit and need, through the generous support of Holly Cratsley, B.Arch ’84 and Nashawtuc Architects, Inc.
Application Requirements
Recipients of the scholarship are selected and notified by the Office of Enrollment Management and Student Services.
Dean’s Award
Award Amount: Varies
Each year the BAC awards a total of $100,000 in Dean’s Awards. This scholarship is a competitive award granted to incoming students who have demonstrated academic excellence. It is a partial scholarship that is renewable for the duration of a student’s program at the BAC.
Application Requirements
Students are automatically considered for this award if they complete their application for admission to the BAC by the priority deadline. The dates for the priority application deadline are October 15 for the Spring semester and February 15 for the Fall semester.
Designers Lighting Forum Scholarship
Award Amount: Varies
This is an annual travel scholarship that sponsors a one-time scholarship for (1) current BAC student each year to attend lighting trade shows and education conferences, with destinations alternating between the Light + Building: International Trade Fair for Architecture and Technology, in Frankfurt, Germany and LightFair International (LFI) in the United States.
To be eligible, students must:
be enrolled full-time and in Segment II or III
be in good academic standing
have successfully completed a Lighting Design course at the BAC [TM7365/365, TM7369/369, CD105E/TM470 Lighting Design Workshop], TM471 Lighting the Environment or its equivalent at another institution
To apply, students must submit:
a short (no longer than 100 words) statement of why they are passionate about learning more about lighting and attending the conference
a rendering, a sample portfolio of lighting design work OR drawings to show their enthusiasm for lighting design
The Howard F. Elkus Scholarship
Award Amount: $1,000
The Howard F. Elkus Scholarship was established in 2017 by Elkus Manfredi Architects in memory of Howard Elkus (1938-2017), who devotedly served The Boston Architectural College from 2009 until his passing in 2017, first as an overseer and then as a trustee in 2015. He, as well as the firm he co-founded, Elkus Manfredi Architects, were and are avid supporters of the College’s mission to diversify the design professions by providing any student the opportunity to pursue his or her dreams and study design. Howard was a great champion of the BAC’s students and hired many to work in his firm. This scholarship provides financial aid to deserving financially disadvantaged and/or under-represented minority students.

Foundation Award

The Foundation Award is a partial scholarship that is granted to meritorious students in their first year with demonstrated financial need. Students are recommended for this award based on the strength of application,, and communication with the Admissions Department.

Preference is given to students who apply for admission to the BAC by the priority deadline. To be considered for the scholarship, students must submit a completed BAC and have a conversation with the Admissions Department.
The William P. Francisco IV, B.Arch ’04 Memorial Scholarship
Award Amount: $1,400
This scholarship was established to honor the memory of Bill Francisco, a BAC graduate and former faculty member. He was a dedicated student who graduated from the BAC in 2004 and went on to work as a Design Manager at Add Inc. The scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving Bachelor of Architecture student who is currently enrolled in or who has completed their first semester of Degree Project Studio.
Scholarship Criteria
The following requirements must be met in order to qualify for the Francisco Scholarship:
Student must be currently enrolled full-time in the Bachelor of Architecture program at the BAC
Student must be enrolled in their first semester of Degree Project Studio in the semester for which this scholarship is awarded

The Heenan Scholarship
Award Amount: $1,400
This scholarship is awarded each fall to an outstanding student based on academic merit and need, in acknowledgement of Edward Heenan and his son, Edward Brett Heenan, in recognition of their love for the profession of architecture.
Scholarship Criteria
The following requirements must be met in order to qualify for the Heenan Scholarship:
Students must be enrolled full-time in their second year at the BAC
Students must have high financial need

Robert Houseman and Richard Kirkham Scholarship
Award Amount: Varies
The Robert Houseman and Richard Kirkham Scholarship was established on April 27, 2005 by William Houseman, ’10 (Hon.) and Kenneth Bloom with the intent of increasing diversity among the BAC students and alumni, and the participation of underrepresented segments of the general population in the design professions in general, and to serve as a model for the development of similar programs at other design schools.

IPAL Fellowship

The IPAL Fellowship Fund was established in 2016 for students participating in the IPAL (Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure) initiative at the BAC. The William E. Nast Scholarship
Award Amount: $800 (1st place) $600 (2nd place)
Established in 1987, through the generosity of William E. Nast, this scholarship is awarded twice a year to assist two outstanding students with the most impressive portfolios from the Segment II Portfolio Review. Students are nominated based on their Portfolio Review performance and then chosen by the Scholarships & Awards Committee.
Scholarship Criteria
The following requirements must be met in order to qualify for the Nast Scholarship:
Student’s portfolio must pass Segment II Portfolio Review with at least one recommendation to be considered for nomination for the award

The Richard Painter Scholarship
Award Amount: $1,800
The Richard Painter Scholarship was established in 2001 with a gift from the Beacon Architectural Associates in honor of Richard Painter, a principal at Beacon Architectural Associates. Beacon principals recognize the demands of working and studying full-time, and hope the scholarship will inspire students to continue progression towards the completion of their program of study.
Scholarship Criteria
The following requirements must be met in order to qualify for the Painter Scholarship:
Students must be enrolled in any undergraduate program at the BAC
Students must have completed at least two semesters in the Concurrent Program at the time of application
Students must have applied for and received Financial Aid (can include Stafford Loans)

The John Heman Pilling Architecture Design Scholarship

Established in 2005 from a gift from Ruth H. Pilling, the Pilling Scholarship is used to assist students with BAC related travel expenses. Ruth Pilling had several passions, including education, excelling in language, and studying through travel. All degree students registered for the chosen travel program will receive an equal distribution of the scholarship.

The PILOT Scholarship
Award Amount: Full tuition scholarship
The PILOT Scholarship, a full tuition and fees scholarship for the length of the program, is awarded to a graduate of the Boston Public Schools and Boston city resident who has been accepted and will be attending the B.Arch, BIA, BDS, or BLA program.

The Steffian Bradley Architects Scholarship

The Steffian Bradley Architects Scholarship Fund in Memory of Peter Steffian and Joseph “Tony” Bradley was established in 1978 through the generosity of Steffian Bradley Architects and is awarded twice a year to help an outstanding and deserving student with a partial tuition scholarship for a semester of study at the Boston Architectural College. The fund, formerly known as the SBA/Steffian Bradley Associates Inc. Scholarship Fund in memory of Joseph M. Bradley, was revised in 2013 to honor both Peter Steffian ’07 (Hon.) and Joseph M. A. Anthony Tappé Fontainebleau Prize
Award Amount: $4,500
Each year, the BAC and Anthony Tappé provide one scholarship for an exciting study abroad program outside Paris, France. Selection is based on academic and practice standing, with preference given to advanced students of Architecture with excellent academic records and portfolio. During the past 80 years, the Fontainebleau Schools have brought together different artistic disciplines in order to explore new ways of seeing, thinking and making architecture. The American Architectural Foundation Scholarship Programs
The architecture profession depends on well-prepared graduates who are able to meet the challenges of the future. Through its commitment to a strong scholarship program, The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and The American Architectural Foundation (AAF) assist undergraduates, graduates and professionals. National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC)
Founders’ Scholarship Foundation: “Each year we are pleased to award over $25,000 to worthy recipients in construction-related programs. Award amounts range from $1,000 to $2,000. HRI is regarded as the research affiliate of the American Nursery & Landscape Association (ANLA). The HRI Endowment fund is composed of several scholarship funds that aid students who are seeking a lifelong career in horticulture.
The MNLA Foundation for Educational Excellence Scholarship Program
To be eligible, applicant’s major must be in a course of study in Horticulture or related sciences, they must be a resident of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for a minimum of one year prior to submitting an application, and completed applications must be submitted by March 31st of the Award Year. The Charles E. Peterson Prize
Every year Historic American Building Survey/Historic American Engineering Record (HABS/HAER) offers students and practitioners employment and professional training opportunities through its summer recording program, competitions, and internships and fellowships. Participants take with them a greater awareness and knowledge of historic buildings, structures and sites, as well as the importance of “preservation through documentation.”
The Tradewell Fellowship
