Introducing the latest addition to Penguin Classics: The Diary of a Young Girl, also known as The Diary of Anne Frank.

Published in English for the first time in 1952, this edition has been revised by Otto H. Frank and Mirjam Pressler.

The story begins with the 13-year-old Anne on her birthday in June 1942 and ends on August 1, 1944—the day she and her family went into hiding. In between are the experiences that have made this diary so universally admired and so deeply cherished by millions of readers—Anne’s vivid accounts of everyday life in hiding, her reflections on her changing world and her own growing maturity, and her perception of those who helped or hindered the family’s efforts to survive.

This new edition includes a Foreword by Alison Leslie Gold, an Introduction by Miep Gies as well as historical notes on the period and additional information about the book’s publication history.

When the original Penguin Classics appeared in 1946, they shook the world of publishing. Each book was a slim paperback, priced at a mere 6d (2½p) – less than the cost of a packet of cigarettes. Its design was revolutionary too: the covers were brightly coloured and eye-catching, and the paper was of high quality. The series editor, E. V. Rieu, took a very personal approach to choosing titles for inclusion – he wanted to bring his favourite books to as wide an audience as possible.

The launch of Penguin Classics was so successful that it paved the way for another great publishing innovation: Penguin Modern Classics, first published in 1961. These re-issued modern classics such as Albert Camus’s The Outsider and Graham Greene’s The Power and the Glory, alongside new translations of works such as Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis and Nikolai Gogol’s Dead Souls.

Today, Penguin Classics is celebrating its 70th anniversary, while Penguin Modern Classics is celebrating its 50th. Together they have introduced millions of readers to some of literature’s greatest works – and continue to do so today.

Clare Kendry is living on the edge. Light-skinned, elegant, and ambitious, she is married to a racist white man unaware of her African American heritage, and has severed all ties to her past after deciding to “pass” as a white woman. Clare’s childhood friend, Irene Redfield, just as light-skinned, has chosen to remain within the African American community, and is simultaneously allured and repelled by Clare’s risky decision to engage in racial masquerade for personal and societal gain. After frequenting African American-centric gatherings together in Harlem, Clare’s interest in Irene turns into a homoerotic longing for Irene’s black identity that she abandoned and can never embrace again, and she is forced to grapple with her decision to pass for white in a way that is both tragic and telling. This edition features a new introduction by Emily Bernard and notes by Thadious M. Davis.
