There is a shortage of biostatisticians in a variety of areas: government (e.g., the Public Health Agency of Canada, Statistics Canada, NRC, Santé Québec, INSPQ, regional departments of public health, health technology assessment units); the pharmaceutical industry and the contract research organizations (CROs) that perform statistical work for industry; academia, including Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Statistics departments, as well as hospital and other medical research institutes.

Biostatistics at McGill

As part of the Faculty of Medicine, our department has a long history in epidemiologic and biostatistical research. In 1984, the term Biostatistics was added to the department name to reflect the largest concentration of PhD level statisticians of any such department in Canada. In 1995 we accepted the first students into a Biostatistics ‘stream’ where the mix of courses was approximately two thirds biostatistics and one third epidemiology as well as epidemiologic methods.

The training program has been revised to require increased depth in statistics and to offer a broader array of statistics and biostatistics courses, while maintaining some of the ‘statistical methods for epidemiology’ strengths of the department. We continue to incorporate biostatistical training in emerging areas in other biomedical fields.

Training in Biostatistics

Two full-time programs are available: MSc and PhD

Along with courses in mathematical statistics and statistical inference, students will gain experience in applied areas such as statistical methods for epidemiology, generalized linear models, survival analysis, longitudinal data, and clinical trials. Skills in data analysis, statistical consulting, and report writing will be emphasized.

Faculty research areas include survival analysis, non-parametric and semi-parametric modelling, analysis of longitudinal data, causal inference, statistical computing, classification and regression trees, methods for evaluating diagnostic accuracy, Bayesian statistics in medicine, statistical methods for clinical trials, and the design and analysis of epidemiologic studies.

Our distance education program makes it possible to participate in a university learning experience, at the graduate level, regardless of location and time. Distance delivery of academic courses facilitates learning wherever you are, at home, at work, or while travelling the world. The time and pace of study can be adjusted to accommodate your commitments to careers and families.

Course requirements at the master’s level are completed over a three-year period. Courses are presented primarily through computer using the myCourses software. An opportunity for face-to-face contact is provided through on-campus practica.

This degree is a regular program within McGill University. Students wishing to enroll in the master’s degree program must meet the admission requirements of the University.

Occupational health professionals who may not meet the admission requirements or who may not wish to obtain a master’s degree, but who wish to pursue professional continuing education, can enroll in the Occupational Health Distance Education Program either as Special Students, or for professional interest. Further information regarding registration for continuing education can be obtained by contacting the Student Affairs Coordinator at [email protected].

Registered students may access their personal academic files through Minerva, to change their personal information (mailing address, contact information, etc.); to verify their financial account at the University; and to access their course marks at the end of each academic term.
