Literature is an art or artistic creation that uses means of expression through language. Language and literature are expression tools that offer insight into the elements that form a culture, the particular characteristics of a society or social group in terms of spirituality, intellect, emotion and physical environment. The literature discipline explores the interrelations of literature with other kinds of cultural objects, such as films, digital media and the visual arts.
Disciplines similar to literature are history, languages and philosophy. Main subjects of courses in literature include: cultural and literature, topics in literary research, reading fiction, poetry, modern drama, classical literature, women’s literature.
Apart from advanced knowledge of literary studies, students will expand their creativity and communication skills. The study of literature provides general knowledge in many fields of interest, enabling analytical thinking of students and developing their ability to make solid arguments on any given subject. Literature graduates will become critical readers and writers and will gain academic skills to conduct original research in the field of literary studies.

Our Master’s Degree program at the Social Sciences Institute at Istanbul Aydın University aims at encouraging students in acquiring critical thinking, persuasive communicative skills, and a sophisticated perspective on the English language and literature. The department accepts students with a bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature or other (un)related fields as long as they demonstrate English proficiency. Ones who do not qualify need to take no-credits preparatory courses at the bachelor’s degree level for at least one semester that will not count towards their Master’s degree. A total of at least 24 local credits and at least 8 courses and a seminar constitute the course work of 60 ECTS required for a master’s degree program with thesis. A thesis of 60 ECTS credits is required for the completion of this 120 ECTS program. The program is modular and consists of elective courses. Students can take elective courses from other related branches as long as their advisors approve. The fact that the teaching staff of the English Language and Literature department has different backgrounds and specializations makes the program more appealing. English Language and Literature program aims at training English Language and Literature lecturers and staff and provides research opportunities for those who are academically involved.
MA In English Language and Literature (with thesis)

The program, enriched by electives, offers areas of study not only for the majors of English Language and Literature but also for the graduates of other branches of social sciences such as “film studies,” “media and public relations,” “international relations” provided that after the entrance exam the candidates complete some undergraduate courses within a year and choose their thesis topics from the related area.

The Bachelor’s Degree Program of the Department of English Language and Literature is a 240 ECTS credits program of 4 years composed of eight semesters, each with a 30 ECTS workload. One ECTS is equal to 25.5 hours of student workload per semester.
The Department of English Language and Literature is one of the first programs founded in year 2007. The program is aimed at responding to Turkey’s growing needs for proficient English speakers who also appreciate the literary richness of the English language.
The department strives to enable its students to fully use their intellectual potentials in comprehending the ideas, attitudes and movements in English Literature. To this end, a wide range of elective courses in undergraduate training leading to the degree of B.A. in English Language and Literature are offered. To facilitate the acquisition of life-long learning skills, the department accomodates students with comparative studies and present them with approaches that broaden their curiousity. On successful completion of the program, students will be able to demonstrate skills in the critical evaluation of literary texts, in writing persuasively in English language and in communicating their ideas in English confidently.
