Course summary

This course is highly regarded in both music business education and the industry at large. It will prepare you to become one of the next generation of music industry leaders and entrepreneurs. All teaching staff on the course are currently working in the music industry, and every week there are a number of high-level industry guests. You will need to be a self-motivated and open-minded student, as this is an intense course, but one which can help you to progress your career across a wide range of music business disciplines.

Working with music industry leaders and organisations, the course has developed a unique curriculum. You will be able to combine a strong underpinning of key business skills (entrepreneurialism, leadership, organisational management, and marketing with essential music industry management knowledge (strategic innovation technology, intellectual property and copyright) and academic concepts and theories relevant to the industry today.

Formal teaching is conducted through sessions which each include a formal lecture, industry guest speaker and seminar exercises. Each of the six modules has a minimum of two assignments. The final project (equivalent to three modules) is a report of a minimum of 12,000 words.

PRINCIPAL LECTURER IN MUSIC BUSINESS MANAGEMENT – COURSE LEADER MA MUSIC BUSINESS

Sally–Anne Gross has worked for over two decades in artist management, legal practice and increasingly in cutting edge music research including the acclaimed “Can Music Make You Sick ?” with Help Musicians UK. Sally heads up the globally recognised MA Music Business Management course with support from Graham Ball (who has worked across labels and live in the UK and US music industries) and George Musgrave, academic and signed music artist.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

A minimum of an upper second class honours degree (2:1) or a lower second class honours degree (2:2) in a relevant degree or with relevant experience.  Applicants should be able to demonstrate some experience of working in the music industry, an aptitude for music business management and an enthusiasm for learning more about music and related industries.

If your first language is not English you should have an IELTS 6.5 with 6.5 in writing and speaking and 6.0 in reading an listening. Applicants must have an English Lanaguage level of IELTS 6.0 with at least 5.5 in speaking and writing, when they apply. All selected applicants are skyped interviewed. 

Applicants are required to submit one academic reference.

About the BS

Performer – Audition Required

Students in the BS in Music Business program develop a background in music and musicianship, as well as a comprehensive understanding of the music industry. Students are required to pass an audition to enter the program, enroll in private instrument lessons, study music theory and harmony, as well as perform in ensembles. These students develop advanced skills in the analysis of music in the style of the common-practice and post-common-practice periods and advanced knowledge in repertoire and literature. The BS in Music Business program prepares students to consider a professional career as a recording/performing artist or work in the music industry for record labels, publishing companies, concert promoters, artist managers, booking agents, and many other fields that comprise the music business.

About the BA

Nonperformer – No Audition Required

The BA in Music Business program offers an opportunity for prospective students who possess little or no musical ability to study the music business and pursue a career in the industry as a nonperformer. No audition is required to enter the BA program, nor is there any requirement to enroll in private instrument lessons or to perform in the music ensembles. Students who graduate with the BA in Music Business degree will work for record labels, publishing companies, live music promoters, artist managers, music supervisors, entertainment attorneys, booking agents, and many other fields that comprise the music business. These positions in the music industry (A&R rep, music supervisor, marketing manager, digital promotions, concert promoter, entertainment attorney, etc.) do not require performance as criteria. The BA in Music Business program prepares these students to successfully enter the music business and become future leaders of the industry.
