The US has an impressive 87 universities featured in this year’s subject rankings for mechanical engineering and, of these, five are featured in the worldwide top ten for mechanical engineering, with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) taking first place for the fifth consecutive year. Outside of the top ten, the US contains ten other universities in the worldwide top 50, including Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech, 13th), California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and Purdue University (the only new entry to the world top 20 this year, rising eight places to 20th)  .

Over to Canada, where we find 20 of the world’s top universities for mechanical engineering – two of which are University of Toronto in 32nd place and McGill University in 33rd place.

Top universities for mechanical engineering in Europe

187 top universities for mechanical engineering are found in Europe and 38 of these can be found in the United Kingdom, with three featuring in the world top 10. Other notable universities include the University of Manchester, rising eight places this year to reach joint 27th and Cranfield University, which, despite dropping four spots this year, remains in the top 50 in 43rd place. Ireland is home to seven of Europe’s top mechanical engineering universities, with Trinity College Dublin (TCD) coming out on top in 101-150th place.

France performs well in the subject rankings this year, with 20 top universities featured, including Ecole Polytechnique in 34th place. Italy also performs well, with 15 universities, including top ten entry, Politecnico di Milano (9th). Germany also contains a sizable number of top mechanical engineering universities, including Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen in joint 18th place.

Spain is home to 12 of Europe’s top mechanical engineering schools. Of these, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid earns the highest ranking in 49th place, ranking particularly well for the employer reputation indicator. Switzerland has three universities featuring in the rankings this year, with two of these in the top 20 worldwide: ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, rising to 12th place) and Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), rising two places this year to 16th place.

Top universities for mechanical engineering in Australia and New Zealand

Australia is home to 18 of the top universities for mechanical engineering. Of these, ten are in the worldwide top 200, including the University of Melbourne, which climbed one spot this year to claim 50th place.

In New Zealand, there are three universities featuring in the rankings this year, with the University of Auckland performing the best, in 101-150th place.

Top universities for mechanical engineering in Asia 

151 top Asian universities are featured in this year’s ranking and with an impressive 33 entries in the rankings this year is Mainland China (the most of any other Asian country). Of these, seven are in the world top 100, with notable universities including Tsinghua University (14th) and Xi’an Jiaotong University (rising five places this year to 46th place).

Also performing well in the rankings is Japan with 20 universities in the mechanical engineering rankings. Notable Japanese universities include the University of Tokyo (joint 18th) and Tokyo Institute of Technology (rising 13 places this year to 35th).

Singapore has two universities in the mechanical engineering rankings this year, both in the world top 20: Nanyang Technological University (NTU, 11th) and National University of Singapore (NUS, 15th). Jordan also has two universities in the rankings this year. Of the five ranked universities in Hong Kong SAR, all are in the world top 150, including the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST, joint 27th).

South Korea contains an admirable 18 mechanical engineering universities in this year’s ranking, with notable universities including KAIST – Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (22nd), Seoul National University (SNU, 23rd) and Sungkyunkwan University (joint 47th).

Top universities for mechanical engineering in Latin America  

In Latin America, there are currently 26 top mechanical engineering universities featured in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020.

Brazil has the most universities in the world rankings this year, with nine universities featured, including Universidade de São Paulo (USP) in the top 100. Mexico has four entrants this year, with its top rated Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM) ranking 51-100.

Containing the second highest number of mechanical engineering universities in Latin America is Colombia, including Universidad de Los Andes Colombia and Universidad Nacional de Colombia, which have both climbed from 201-250th place to 151-200th this year. Chile has four top universities in the rankings this year.

Top universities for mechanical engineering in Africa and the Middle East 

The Middle East boasts 22 universities in the subject rankings for mechanical engineering. Israel is home to three of these universities, and Saudi Arabia has four, including King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM), which climbed from 151-200 to 101-150.

The United Arab Emirates has three top universities in the mechanical engineering subject rankings, with Khalifa University rising from 301-350th to 151-200th place this year. Iran is home to the most Middle Eastern universities in the rankings this year, with seven, including new entry this year; K.N.Toosi University of Technology (451-500th).

Africa is home to nine universities in the mechanical engineering subject rankings this year, including five in South Africa and four in Egypt, where Cairo University climbed from 251-300th to 151-200th.
