Mechanical Engineering MSc/PG Dip/PG Cert

These are the top universities in the United Kingdom for engineering, based on their reputation and research in the field.

In addition to the rankings of 1,750 of the world’s top universities overall and by region and country, the eighth annual U.S. News Best Global Universities rankings include an examination of the leaders in key academic subject areas. U.S. News used a separate methodology to publish the top global universities in 43 subject areas. The subject rankings are powered by Clarivate™. Clarivate provided the data and metrics used in the rankings, and the bibliometric data was based on the Web of Science™.

These subject-specific rankings – which are not of academic majors, departments or specific schools at universities, such as business or medical schools – are based on academic research performance in those subjects. U.S. News used various bibliometric measures, including publications and citations, as well as indicators for global and regional reputation in each specific subject.

In many cases, an institution that had a strong focus on a certain subject was ranked in that subject but was excluded from the overall Best Global Universities ranking. In total, 255 universities were included in the subject rankings but not ranked in the overall ranking. Three countries – Jamaica, Tanzania and Zambia – are represented in the subject rankings but not among the 91 countries in the overall ranking.

Ranking Indicators

The bibliometric indicators are based on data from the Web of Science for the five-year period from 2015-2019. The Web of Science is a web-based research platform that covers more than 21,100 of the most influential and authoritative scholarly journals worldwide in the sciences, social sciences, and arts and humanities.

The 43 subject fields used in the analysis came from subject schemas in Clarivate, which use the content and citation indicators from the Web of Science. Publications are limited to those published between 2015 to 2019. However, the citations to those papers come from all publications, including the most recent data available. For the 2022 rankings, the cutoff date was April 29, 2021. It is necessary to use a slightly older window of publication to allow for citations to accumulate and provide statistically relevant results.

U.S. News published five new subject area rankings in the following fields:

  • Condensed matter physics (250 ranked).
  • Food science and technology (200 ranked).
  • Optics (250 ranked).
  • Physical chemistry (500 ranked).
  • Polymer science (100 ranked).

This brings the total number of subject area rankings to 43, up from 38 in last year’s edition. These continue to include key fields such as engineering, computer science, and economics and business.

The first step in producing the subject rankings was to create the total universe of schools that could be ranked in each field. Depending on the subject, the number of universities ranked ranged from a low of 170 in polymer science to a high of 1,245 in chemistry (see table below).

The total number of universities ranked was based on the number of papers published in that subject a school needed to have to be included in the ranking pool. U.S. News, working with Clarivate, established those paper thresholds for each subject for the 2015 to 2019 time period. The table below has the paper thresholds for each ranking: 12 subjects had a 200-paper threshold, and 31 subjects had a 250-paper threshold, both during the 2015 to 2019 time period.

The next step was for U.S. News to determine, out of the total number of universities ranked in a subject for the analysis, how many of those schools in a given subject U.S. News would publish rankings for on usnews.com. The table below lists the number of ranked universities published in each subject on usnews.com.
