On behalf of the entire staff and students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, it is my honor and privilege to welcome you to the website of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ibadan. Veterinary medicine is the branch of science that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease, breeding, genetics, disorder and injury in animals. The scope of veterinary medicine is wide, covering all animal species, both domesticated and wild, with a wide range of conditions which can affect different species.Veterinary science helps human health through the monitoring and control of zoonotic disease (infectious disease transmitted from non-human animals to humans) and veterinary scientists often collaborate with epidemiologists. The University of Ibadan Governing Council approved the establishment of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in 1961, with the Preclinical and Paraclinical programme at Ibadan and its Clinical unit at Vom. In October 1963, two Veterinary departments – Veterinary Anatomy & Physiology and Veterinary Medicine were established. Until 1970, a co-operative arrangement existed with Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. A total of 23 graduates in 4 sets were produced by the University of Ibadan under the cooperative arrangement. Full Clinical courses were introduced at Ibadan in 1971. The first set of 13 Veterinarians produced solely by the University of Ibadan graduated in 1972. The Faculty was formally established with the separation of the three Veterinary departments namely; Veterinary Anatomy and Physiology, Veterinary Medicine and Surgery and Veterinary Pathology in 1975 and the establishment of a new Department of Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine. In 1976, each of the 3 older departments was split into two making a total of seven departments. The Veterinary Teaching Hospital was established in 1981 to coordinate all the clinical and diagnostic services in the faculty.Graduates of this faculty have occupied several positions in Industries, Academic and research institutes. Graduates of this faculty and of course of any Veterinary school have job opportunity in; Teaching and Research in Universities and Research Institutes, Nigeria Custom Service, Immigration Services, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Prison Services, State Veterinary Services, Federal Livestock Department, Bank and Insurance Company, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC), Nigeria Agriculture Quarantine Services and National Zoonoses Centre.In 1980, the Faculty Board of Veterinary Medicine approved the establishment of our International Scientific Journal named Tropical Veterinarian devoted to all aspects of health and disease of animals in the topic.More information about the Faculty can be obtained by visits to the website of the departments in the Faculty. It is noteworthy that all the programmes in the Faculty are fully accredited by both National Universities Commission and Veterinary Council of Nigeria.
