Cyber security is a rapidly growing field. In recent years, cyber attacks have increased in both number and sophistication. This has resulted in a major hiring surge among all the leading tech companies. In fact, Google alone has added over 8,000 new positions in the past year alone. If you’re interested in working in cyber security but don’t know where to start learning or what to learn, this post will give you a great starting point (and help you find out your average salary potential).
According to the survey, the average salary of cyber security professionals in 2015 is around $85,000. It’s 36% higher than the IT -related positions overall.
Average salary in cyber security
In reality, the average salary for a cyber security professional depends largely on a few key factors. Primary among them are the candidate’s experience level and where they are located in respective to companies with need for their services. For example, candidates that already have a number of years under their belt that hold higher-tier positions, may command as much as $250,000 annually. Those in less desirable markets and/or entry-level positions generally fall loosely within the mid-range mentioned previously.
According to the 2016 Global Information Security Workforce Study by (ISC)2 and (U.S.) Department of Commerce, the average annual salary in cyber security is $90,000 and growing at a rate of 19 percent. Though there are certain jobs more lucrative than others in their field, high-risk, high-reward is a common theme when it comes to this type of job.

I’m sure there are numerous variables that can affect this number, and it’s hard to really say what an appropriate salary would be. Cyber security roles are on the rise, but at the end of the day, salaries will probably be determined by which company, sector, or country you work for.
Many careers have average salaries that exceed $100K, but few professions pay so well for entry-level professionals. It should also be noted that these figures are in USD and then converted to AUD, therefore these figures can be higher for other countries. If you are lucky enough to work in one of the roles with an above average salary then you definitely should have no problems finding other people willing to pay for your services.
