Edo

  • Edo State is a state in the Nigerian federation. It was created on October 1st, 1991 from part of Bendel State and became fully operational on May 27th, 1992 after elections were held.
  • The Edo people are an ethnic group that speaks the Edo language and reside in Edo State. The name “Edo” is said to be derived from the Benin Kingdom era when there were two major states: Idah and Kukuruku (modern Owan). The people of these two states spoke different languages but shared common borderlines, hence they termed themselves “Edos” meaning ‘people who share same borders.’
  • The Ewes occupy about 60% of Nigeria’s land mass but less than 2% of its population. This can be attributed to their geographical location which makes them difficult to access due to poor infrastructure development as well as political instability since independence till date; thus making it very hard for them gain access opportunities within Nigeria’s economy system especially those living outside Igboland where most opportunities exist today.”
