The university was established as a land-grant and agricultural school in 1885 under the Morrill Act of 1862. In 1958, it became a part of the Arizona state university system. It was named after the Tempe Normal School which was founded in 1889 as a normal school (teacher training) for teachers to educate Native Americans from local reservations. In 1960, it merged with Phoenix College to become Arizona State College and then gained university status in 1967 when it became Arizona State University at Tempe.
ASU has over 70 undergraduate majors and 100 graduate programs across its four campuses: Polytechnic campus (main campus), West campus, Downtown Phoenix campus and SkySong Innovation Center (Scottsdale). The university provides many opportunities for students through its academic departments including computer science department.
