The AA Foundation Course is a one-year introduction to an art- and design-based education that uses architectural language as its vehicle. Students develop their conceptual ideas through experimenting with a wide range of media and creative disciplines in an intimate, studio based-environment. The course seeks to develop the intellectual and process-based abilities of each participant, while simultaneously introducing each individual to themselves; to their own interests, passions, aspirations and inspirations. Once confident and articulate about a particular approach, students can readily galvanise their own self-critique, drive and skills to more successfully pursue education in var- ious creative disciplines. Drawing on a number of pedagogical practices, experienced tutors and visiting practitioners, the Foundation Course offers a unique, cross-disciplinary education within the context of an architectural school.
Term 1 focuses on the development of skills, observation and conversation though the forensic examination of familiar spaces; a room, its contents, complex junctions, interconnecting volumes, thresholds, the street, landmarks and hip hang-outs. In parallel with studio practice, students will identify and compile a series of contextual references, and will apply critical thinking to this self-initiated research. Tutorials and workshops will introduce techniques and encourage translation from observation to material interpretation.
Term 2 concentrates more substantially on work that will start to clarify a territory of specific interest for the individual. The development of a short film will describe a vignette from a personal perspective, introducing ideas will then be developed through the examination of the corporeal body, image veneer, dynamics, collected hinterland, habits and tempo to site, place, space, material assemblage, appropriation, extension and occupation of built form. Students will move from survey to ‘thinking through making’ tests and experiments to proposals.
