The American Psychological Association (APA) accredits a variety of psychology-related programs, including Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) programs offered in a hybrid learning format. APA accreditation shows that the program meets national education standards, and in some states, graduation from an APA-accredited program is required to earn licensure.

Common Courses in APA-Accredited Hybrid PsyD Programs

APA-accredited PsyD Programs can focus on clinical psychology as well as counseling; some programs can have further specializations like neuropsychology, forensic psychology, or clinical health psychology. While these hybrid programs have both online and on-campus portions, some of them have a higher percentage of online coursework than others. Hybrid PsyD programs could require up to 134 credits, and applicants with a master’s degree will need to complete fewer courses than those with an undergraduate degree. The programs can take between four and six years to complete, which typically includes hands-on practicums and internships.

Lifespan Development in Psychology

These courses explore how humans develop over their lifespan as well as how they may adapt. These courses may involve case studies or the evaluation of journal articles. A few of the topics that can be covered are cognitive development, ethology, and moral development.

History of Psychology

In an advanced history course, students can learn about the historical theories that are the basis of psychology. They may explore the different schools of thought and how they have evolved over time, and students could also learn how psychological theories have been shaped by political factors.

Ethics in Psychology

Courses that focus on ethics are meant to teach students about professional ethics and standards that govern psychology practice. This can include regulations from the American Psychological Association (APA). In some courses, students may be asked to evaluate challenging cases and apply ethical guidelines to them.

Psychopathology in Adults

Courses in this area could focus on aspects of mental illness in adults, such as personality disorders and anxiety. Students may be introduced to the categories covered by the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) as well as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). Students may also learn how to diagnose and treat these disorders.

Personality Assessment

Personality assessment courses explore the objective techniques that can be used to assess a patient’s personality. The courses may cover the details of the objective measures used as well as the relevant personality scales. Students may also learn about the ethical issues that must be considered where conducting personality assessments in clinical and non-clinical environments.
