Updated American Political Novels

Recently, I have been listening to an audio version of the book titled Updaded American Political Novels by David Charter. Charter creates a list of bestselling American political novels between 1976 and 2009 providing full length reviews of each novel.  This list includes novels written by Washington Irving, Benjamin Franklin, Herman Melville, Norman Mailer, John Updike, Gore Vidal, Thomas Pynchon and Kurt Vonnegut Jr..

I decided to listen to Updaded American Political Novels as a part of my e-learning World Literature module at the University. This book offers insights into various essential and prominent novelists and great works of the twentieth century. Moreover, this audiobook is my first experience with audiobooks.  The story seems to be interesting and engaging and the style of writing is very amusing.

There are different types of American Political Novels. The characters must be “around the same age, race, gender, income or social class”. Charter says that this list only includes novels that are part of the tradition of literature which means no non-fiction. But why are these books written? They are written to engage readers by providing a way to take satisfaction in national events that were important to them. They are written for people who want to read about the contemporary political issues happening in America.

There are many books about the history of American politics. The reading list is filled with novels written as a result of recent financial crisis as well as political comedy set in 1776 before the American Revolution.  Historical, comedic and satirical novels fit the bill for those looking for a light read. Charter starts off with a chapter summarizing each novel and then provide a full length review including plot summaries and critiques of each novel.

Using online data, Charter has listed more than 150 books, with the number of days on the New York Times Best Seller list for fiction, nonfiction and hardcover combined. From these lists Charter chooses three novels for each year from 1976 to 2009. For example, in 1993 he selected Barbara Kingsolver’s The Bean Trees, Stephen King’s Needful Things and Robert Penn Warren’s Band of Brothers. By giving a capsule review and an interesting context for the story Charter gives the reader a chance to explore lesser-known political fictions and also see what was actually happening in politics at that time.
