Academic entry qualification overview

We require a primary dental qualification from a recognised institution and for the MSc and PGDip at least two years post qualification experience

English language

International students must demonstrate English proficiency through a secure and approved testing system. We ask for English language proof if you are from non-majority English speaking countries (a list of majority English speaking countries, as defined by the UK Home Office, can be found here).

Specifically, we require a minimum of:

  • IELTS: 6.5 (with no less than 6.0 in all components)
  • TOEFL: 90 (internet-based) (Minimum: Listening 20; Writing 20; Reading 20 and Speaking 20)

Dentistry in USA is offered as a 4-year Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) degree. Both of them have the same curriculum and are equivalent to Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) in India. However, unlike India, dental schools in USA accept only those students in DDS or DMD who have a 4-year bachelors from US or Canada institutes. 

Average annual tuition fees for dentistry in USA ranges between 11,400 USD to 84,630 USD, equivalent to 84.3 lakhs – 62.6 lakhs INR. The cost of pursuing bachelors gets added to these tuition fees for study abroad aspirants. It is somewhere around 15,000 USD to 60,000 USD per annum, depending on the university and the program. Nevertheless the salary for dentists in USA is also very lucrative and is approximately 238,000 USD (1.75 crore INR) per annum.

BDS students from India interested in practicing as a dentist in USA can also apply for a 2-year Advanced Standing Doctor of Dentistry program. It is offered by over 30 universities in this country. Other than that, bachelors and masters degree in dentistry are also offered by some US universities. Graduates of such programs cannot practise as a dentist but work under them as assistant, hygienist, technician, etc.

postgraduate dental programs in sweden

The purpose of the two-year International Master’s programme is to provide students with basic research training and the experience of independently planning and executing a research project under guidance from an experience researcher. The programme will also provide the student with advanced knowledge and skills in their major subject, dentistry, with special focus on a subarea. After graduating from the programme, the student should be able to: review scientific literature; participate in planning and conducting research and development within the profession; and function as a resource dentist in the selected subarea. The Master’s degree also qualifies the student for further postgraduate studies towards e.g. PhD.

Degree

Upon successful completion of the Master’s programme, which includes a research project and the defence of a thesis (2nd cycle), students will be awarded a Master’s Degree in Dental Science (MDSc).

Fee

The annual fee is 650 000 SEK (2021). The fee covers the cost of all education, examination, theory classes, as well as all costs related to the preclinical/clinical training at the University Clinic. This includes working clothes, office space, insurance costs, and administrative support.

This education is exclusively offered as a commissioned education and will be regulated via an agreement between the Faculty of Odontology and the employer/sponsor of the student. Malmö University does not offer any grant or scholarship for program participation.

Future academic career

Following successful completion of the 2-year international master program, academically oriented students may wish to continue with further research studies. Research interested students may apply to the Faculty Board of Research and Research Education to a 4-year Odont Dr (PhD) full-time program after agreement with their research supervisor, and provided that continued financial support and scholarship can be obtained from the sponsor. During the doctoral study period, doctoral students devote themselves to a research project under the supervision of experienced researchers. The core of the program is the training in the research group, but general and specific scientific courses are also included in the program. The written dissertation is defended by the doctoral student in a public seminar, and leads upon successful completion to the doctoral degree. The PhD program equals 240 higher education credits.

Malmö University requires all applicants to validate their university credentials through ECE. Therefore all applicants need to order a course by course evaluation report for post secondary/university level studies (secondary/high school studies not needed). Go to the ECE website and follow the instructions for course by course evaluation. Applicants need to order their evaluation report and send their diplomas and transcripts to ECE. The standard processing time for an evaluation report is approximately three weeks from receipt, review and approval of all documents, information and payment.
