2 Year Law School California

We begin with 2 Year Law School California,

Accelerated JD vs. Standard JD

An accelerated JD is an option for students who wish to work at a faster pace, in order to finish law school in two or two-and-a-half years (including summers), as opposed to the standard three year course of study. Students must complete the same standard and elective coursework. Often, tuition costs will remain similar between these degrees, as courses are taken during the summer months. Students completing an accelerated program may not have the opportunity to participate in summer internships, but can still gain hands-on opportunities through externships, clinics, and law review participation.

Applications for accelerated JD programs are similar to those for standard JD programs. Students will make their application through the Law School Admissions Council (LSAC)’s Credential Assembly Service. Students must often submit transcripts, LSAT scores, and recommendations. Personal statements or interviews are required by some programs.

Accelerated JD Programs in California

Pepperdine University

At Pepperdine, in Malibu, students can earn the JD and a certificate in alternative dispute resolution in 24 months. Students begin their program in May, and work through two years of legal studies. Accelerated students can participate in many co-curricular opportunities like advocacy competitions and the four School of Law journals. Accelerated students can also participate in the on-campus interview program in order to seek post-graduation employment.

Southwestern Law School

Southwestern Law School, in Los Angeles, provides an accelerated JD program called SCALE. It was the first 2-year program in the country, beginning in 1975. This program aims to integrate instruction in professional legal skills alongside of traditional law school classes. Students participate in an externship as a component of their coursework, and many also engage in other co-curricular programs such as the negotiations team.

California Western School of Law

The California Western School of Law, in San Diego, provides students the opportunity to complete the JD in two years by earning additional credits as part of the trimester system. The program is very flexible, allowing students to choose to take trimesters off to study abroad, complete an internship, or for personal reasons. Students can learn about professional responsibility through the STEPPS program. This program is taken during the second year.

University of the Pacific

The McGeorge School of Law at the University of the Pacific, in Sacramento, offers an accelerated JD Honors program. Students can graduate in two-and-a-half years, and be prepared for the February bar exam. A free summer externship for credit with a governmental agency or non-profit is a component of the program. Students are also encouraged to complete a summer associate position in the summer between the second year and final semester. Participants have the opportunity to participate in co-curricular programs as well, such as law review and moot court.

University of Southern California

Qualified USC undergraduates may enroll in a 3+3 undergrad/JD program in order to accelerate their degree completion. Students must maintain top academic credentials to qualify. The program allows students to earn a bachelor’s degree in three years and a JD in three years, saving one year of overall study. USC undergrads should contact the law school academic advisor to review their qualifications for the program as well as application requirements.

Many universities in the state of California offer ways to accelerate the JD course of study. These programs will allow students to enter the field of law quicker.

  • A “3+3 JD program” or “BA to JD program” is a program in which students combine certain requirements of a bachelor’s degree (usually a BA) with the requirements of the Juris Doctor degree. Students thus usually receive their bachelor’s degree after completing the first year of law school. Typically, students complete the two degrees in six years rather than the usual seven. The undergraduate college and law school may either be independent institutions, or part of a single large university. Accelerated JD programs differ from most dual degree programs in that the degrees are of different levels, and are obtained sequentially rather than concurrently. Requirements for admission of undergraduates to such programs are typically higher than for general enrollment. Some programs further restrict enrollment to students in a specific prelaw major.
  • A “2-year JD program” is a Juris Doctor degree that is offered independently of a bachelor’s degree. Typically, students are required to complete the same number of credit hours as traditional three-year JD students, but in a more condensed period.

U.S. News & World Report stated that as a result of student concerns about the time and cost (both in terms of tuition and the opportunity cost associated with foregoing a salary for three years) required to complete a law degree, there has been an emerging trend to develop accelerated JD programs.

Program guarantees scholarships and postgraduate fellowships

Starting this year, New York Law School (NYLS) has launched a new JD program that can be completed in two years.

The new JD takes the same curriculum in NYLS’s traditional three-year program and instead delivers it over a period of 24 months.

Even though the program is compressed, students will also have opportunities — and one hopes, the time — to take part in extracurricular activities such as law reviews and moot courts.

The new JD is aimed specifically at honors students, and as such, admission will automatically come with a merit scholarship of at least $50,000. Additionally, postgraduate fellowships are guaranteed for all students, through the school’s partnerships with law firms, government agencies, nonprofits, and companies.

The accelerated JD, according to the school’s website, will focus on the growth areas of New York City’s economy, including financial services and government.

Although JD programs are typically delivered over a three-year period, an increasing number of law schools are offering more accelerated versions. Washington’s Gonzaga School of Law, for instance, offers an accelerated JD program that can be completed in two years. In this program, students receive their degree in May of their second year, and are able to sit for the bar as early as that July.

The Los Angeles-based Southwestern Law School was reportedly the first school to offer an accelerated JD program in the US, which launched in 1974. In the summer of 2014, Brooklyn Law School began offering New York City’s first two-year JD.

Other law schools that offer accelerated JD programs include Pepperdine School of Law, Northwestern Law, and Iowa Law, among others.

Some law schools, like SUNY Buffalo Law School, offer accelerated JD programs designed for international lawyers who already hold a law degree from a jurisdiction outside the United States.

In additional the school’s new JD programs, NYLS also offers LL.M. programs in Taxation and American Business Law.

NYLS’ new accelerated JD program launched in January and is currently in full swing. For more information, please see the NYLS accelerated JD course webpage. For more about NYLS’ LL.M. programs, please go to the school’s full profile on LLM GUIDE.

Law Accreditation

In order to practise law upon returning to Canada, students with LLB degrees from overseas will need to assess their qualifications with the National Committee on Accreditation (the NCA).

In order to obtain an NCA Certificate of Qualification, you will likely be required to sit further tests upon your return to Canada.
